How to maintain your scented candle so that it remains beautiful longer?

Now that you know all the facets of how touse a scented candle, you need to know all its secrets, so that you can keep it as long as possible. Because a scented candle for the home is not just decorative: the idea is to use it every day. That's why we offer you our special guide "Using a scented candle". You will find all our tips to allow you to enjoy its fragrance for no less than 50 hours!

You love your beautiful La Belle Mèche candle: you like its smell, you like its packaging and you don't want to see it go up in smoke too quickly... We understand completely. That's why we give you all our tips so that you can optimize its burning time and that it lasts longer.

But first, let us explain how a candle burns and how to care for your precious scented object.

How does a scented candle work?

Lighting a candle is not new and the craftsmanship of candle making has endured over time. Here, we will not speak to you about the manufacture of our candles by our candle maker, but of its operation. So how do our La Belle Mèche scented candles work?

When you light a candle with your match or lighter, a flame will form at the end of the wick. Once the melting point is reached, the heat of this flame will melt the soy wax nearby. This melted wax will rise all along the wick, by capillarity. And thanks to its sufficiently high temperature, the wax will be vaporized and then consumed at the flame. It is therefore the wax that burns and maintains the flame of your candle. You can then enjoy the olfactory pleasure offered by your scented product without beeswax.

Now that you know how your La Belle Mèche candle works, here are our tips for use. This way, your candle will stay beautiful as long as possible and will burn out less quickly. You'll have endless cosy moments!

Signs that you are using your scented candle correctly

A healthy La Belle Mèche scented candle is a candle whose non-GMO vegetable wax remains smooth and flat. Indeed, when you use your scented candle correctly, the wax goes down little by little in the container, in a homogeneous way. Thus, the candle does not dig itself and one does not lose matter, which would remain stuck to the edges of the glass pot without ever being burned.

Another sign that you are using your scented candle properly is that the wick is still in the centre. In this way, the candle wax will melt evenly when lit.

Now that we have seen how to recognize a well used natural candle, we are going to give you all our tips so that you can reproduce the same thing at home.

Our tips for using a scented candle

To keep your scented candle looking good for as long as possible, here are some tips:

Burn your candle between 1 and 2 hours

When you buy a La Belle Mèche candle, we always advise you to burn it between 1 and 2 hours. This is the time needed for the entire surface of the plant wax in the glass to liquefy. By making sure you have a first layer of liquid wax, you allow it to sink evenly over time. This way you avoid digging a hole in the centre of the candle, around the wick. Because when the candle digs itself in this way (due to a too short burning time) you lose burning time. Indeed, since the natural wax remains stuck to the edges of the candle, the flame does not make it melt any more (Sacrilege!). It should be noted that for our natural candles Apothicaire with essential oils, we advise a burning time of 1h30.

Smother the flame rather than blowing on it

If you smother the flame of your candle rather than blowing it out, it will give off less black smoke and soot. This is when you will need to refocus the wick, as explained above. To smother the flame of your candle, you can use a candle snuffer. This small utensil will allow you to deprive the flame of oxygen and thus stop the burning of your candle. You can also put a lid on the candle or a plate, etc. Be careful not to use a flammable material to smother the flame (such as a sheet of paper or cardboard for example)

Refocus the wick after extinction

Indeed, our cotton wicks, when they burn, tend to move to the sides, because of the heat. If you relight the wick without cutting it, one side of the candle will burn faster than the other. Apart from the aesthetic aspect, you risk losing burning time and that would be a shame! Therefore, we always advise you to replace your wick in the centre of the candle after extinguishing it. To do this, you can use a toothpick or a pen to avoid burning yourself. The idea is to do this before the scented wax has time to cool.

Recut the wick before each use

Another very important tip: cut the wick of the candle before each use. Because first of all, when your candle burns, soot forms around the wick. This is why the wick of your candle is black after use. Re-cutting the cotton wick before relighting your scented candle allows you to avoid soot and a too high flame. You will also avoid the bad odors of burned!

Light your candle 1 hour before receiving

To ensure an optimal diffusion of the perfume of your candle, we advise you to light it 1 hour before receiving. Thus, the wax will have time to melt and to go up by capillarity to the flame, where the perfume will be diffused. Once lit, your scented candle will release its fragrance in your room. That will make it possible to create a cordial environment there, to spend a good moment of user-friendliness.
